About Us

Emma & Pickles creates and sells specially designed headgear for women who have lost their hair as a result of chemotherapy treatment for cancer and other medical conditions. The designs also look good with hair! A key feature is the high-quality fabrics specially chosen for their softness and comfort allied to stylish timeless designs.

Emma is Emma Way, with a professional background in senior management in publishing, the environment and the third sector.

Based in rural Somerset, The Studio, my home office, is located in the attic of our home.

Pickles (Mr Pickles in full) is my much-loved life-enhancing rescue dog. Probably a collie, springer, pointer cross, he arrived in my life in January 2007, then about one year old and full of exuberance. He was responsible for ensuring that I was fitter than I had been for decades when breast cancer was diagnosed a few months later. His joy in country life and his reluctance to see me go out to work was a prime motivator in setting up my own business. He would really like me not to work at all, but seeing me disappear upstairs is preferable to the alternative.

Emma & Pickles was created as a result of a 'eureka' moment in August 2007. My hair was all but gone following my second chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. I'd decided at the outset that I wasn't a wig person (I love my naturally red hair far too much to attempt to replicate it) and had my hair cut brutally short before starting treatment to avoid finding it in long lengths on my pillow. I then set about looking for suitable headgear, but found it nigh impossible to find anything on the high street or online that met my needs.

Most hats were unsuitable for indoor use and certainly not comfortable enough for my sensitive scalp, while scarves, though a useful alternative, meant fiddling about with my arms above my head (not ideal after surgery) and didn't offer the look I was after. I therefore decided to commission some designs instead - fulfilling all my requirements of stylish yet practical headgear that was suitable to wear all day, in or out, and made in super-soft, breathable fabrics.

What I realised was that there would be other women with similar needs and that, once my own treatment was over, with my direct experience of the effects of chemotherapy hair loss and of running a business, I would in a position to help others.

Just because you have cancer doesn't mean that you can't look good and feel good and get on with the business of enjoying whatever life is possible.

Emma & Pickles Limited was established as a limited company in November 2007.
